(Dan Tri) – According to Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, next year’s Russian presidential election should be postponed or the only candidate should be President Vladimir Putin amid the conflict in Ukraine.

`I propose, now that the special military operation in Ukraine continues, to unanimously decide that we will have only one candidate in the election, President Vladimir Putin, or temporarily postpone the election.`
Russian leaders have not yet commented on Mr. Kadyrov’s proposal.
`In my opinion, the election should not be postponed. I understand what Mr. Kadyrov means. I think it is important for the President now to know the level of support of the people. We should hold an election with many candidates
At the Eastern Economic Forum in the port city of Vladivostok on September 12, President Putin said he would make a decision on whether to run for re-election or not later this year when the election date is set.
The Russian Parliament will set the date for presidential elections every six years after the presidential term is increased from four to six years.
According to the plan, the Russian presidential election for a new term is expected to take place in March 2024.
If no candidate receives more than half of the votes, the second round will take place on April 7, 2024.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov earlier this year confirmed that the 2024 Russian presidential election would still take place as planned despite the conflict in Ukraine.
He also said that President Putin `receives absolute support from the people`.
`The President has not announced his candidacy. However, if the President announces his candidacy, it is clear that in our country, at the present time, no one can really compete with the President.
Mr. Putin, 70 years old, is in his fourth presidential term.
In 2012, Mr. Putin continued to run for president, and was elected for a third term with 63% of the electoral vote.
In 2020, after the referendum, Russia passed a constitutional amendment, including the removal of presidential term limits, paving the way for Mr. Putin to stay in power until 2036.
